स्मरणीयं चरनयुगलमंबायाः
I have started this humble effort of translating श्री ललिथासहस्रनामम् . Hope all of you will find this helpful. I relied heavily upon the Malayalam translation of श्री ललितासहस्रनामम् by Sri. Kandiyoor Mahadeva Sastrigal, who was my grandmother's guru and whose works I am familiar with, from my childhood.
The word ळ is distinct from ल in Sanskrit. Although I have heard somewhere that there is a प्रमाणं that says लळ योरभॆदः that is there is no difference between ल and ळ I am not interchanging them to avoid confusion and to make the meanings clearer. They are also pronounced in different ways. ल like the L in leaves, life and ळ like the L in clear , pleasure, please. The meanings do change with the either of these letters. कुलम् = is one's ancestry and कुळम् is कुळाचारम् a method of Saktipooja.
I consider Sri Lalithasahasranamam as a deeply personal experience of the devotee. When a devotee does the pooja for her and starts the pooja with the words सा ऽहम् भावेन पूजयेत् I worship with the awareness that she is me, her presence and her physical form becomes that of the devotee. The devotee experiences her in the human form from which experience he/she renounces all forms and experiences her as the प्रत्यग् चितीरूपा , one whose form is the ultimate knowledge, the supreme intelligence. The experience flows from the form to the formless.
Lalitha sahasranamam begins with the description of Devi's physical form. Then it moves on to her all encompassing presence in every kind of Shakti pooja.
